Johannesburg

For many visitors to South Africa, Johannesburg marks the first stop, for it is at Johannesburg International Airport that most international flights make their landing. The initial impression for many visitors, is that looks and feels much like any major city. Upon further analysis, however, you will discover its many distinctive pleasures.  This highly cosmopolitan city is home to some of the liveliest townships, and most vibrant cultural life in the country.

It is South Africa's largest city and it offers visitors a large selection of recreational facilities ranging from natural and man made escapes like mountain trails, large lakes, botanical gardens, the historically significant Museum Africa, some twenty theatres, gold and diamond mine visits, a tremendous variety of ethnic restaurants arising from large scale immigration from all parts of the world, a large Zulu kraal with accommodation and Zulu dancing displays, an authentic mine village (Gold Reef City) recreated with underground visits and gold pouring, and a variety of adventure orientated attractions such as the Cheetah Farm, Crocodile Farm, and Snake Parks.

A caution for visitors is that Johannesburg does have a high crime rate and it is therefore recommended that one be alert at all times. Do not wear flashy jewelry and avoid walking around alone at night. It is true that most travelers pass through Johannesburg free of incident; and frequently comment on the charming and friendly nature of its people. Johannesburgers will go out of their to undermine the city's reputation and will make you feel very welcome.
