Gauteng is vibrant, sophisticated, cosmopolitan, and unmistakably the African heart of
Africa. Its
rich and diverse heritage developed from an infusion of global
cultures locked in purposeful economic and social endeavour for
over a century.
Although lacking the spectacular attractions of the Cape
Province or Mpumalanga, Gauteng has a subtle character all of its
own. Startling outcrops of rock known as koppies, with
intriguing and often lucrative geology, are set in open grassy
plains of deep-red earth, and the usually mild climate is broken
occasionally by spectacular lightning and massive summer storms,
which can unleash torrents of water within seconds.
The light,
particularly at dawn and dusk, is a photographer's dream,
rendering serene and compelling even the starkest of industrial
landscapes.
