Seasons
Marked topographical differences between
vaulting boulder outcrops and plunging valleys create significant variations in
climate. There are hot, wet summers and dry warm winters.
Rainfall: Rainfall
occurs predominantly in summer, which is from September to April. Rain occurs
mostly as late-afternoon or evening thunderstorms. Mists and orographic rain (associated
with or induced by mountains) are frequent at higher altitudes. Winters fall
between May and August, and tend to be dry.
Average annual rainfall within the
Mthethomusha Game Reserve varies according to the altitude. Land above 900m
receives about 850mm a year. Land below 500m receives around 675mm a year.
Temperatures: Daytime
summer temperatures can be high, often rising above 30°C/86°F. The summer
nights are usually warm. In winter, there are chilly nights and crisp early
mornings - about 6°C/43°F is the minimum. The winter days are fine and warm.
